CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

IN THE HEART of Westminster, Benton turned down the slope leading under the modern office building. He pulled up to a metal barrier, lowered the window and looked into the lens above the intercom. The barrier lifted silently without him having to press the intercom. Driving the Qashqai through the grey concrete car park made the harsh fluorescent lights strobe, hurting his eyes as he passed underneath them.

Benton pulled into a bay at the far end of the car park. He got out and stood next to the car with one hand on the door, ready to shut it. But he didn’t; he stood locked in place by the increasingly frequent nightmares that transported him back to the tortuous, stinking basement in all-consuming vivid detail. The bare bulb, knocked by one of his tormentors as they beat him, swung from the ceiling and blinded his half-closed swollen eyes. Fighting to get back into reality, Benton forced his shaking left hand onto the door frame. With gritted teeth he slammed the car door on his right hand. The intense pain drove the horrors away, leaving him breathing heavily in a cold sweat.

When the pain dulled to a low throb, Benton walked over and looked into the camera above a heavy metal door. The light went from red to green as the facial recognition software released the lock. He bounded up the stairs, repeating the same camera recognition to enter the ultra-modern offices of Project Dragonfly.

‘Welcome back, Commander,’ said a pretty blonde on reception.

Benton acknowledged her with a curt nod and walked towards the command centre at the far end of the office.

‘I want a status report on West and Alpha team,’ he ordered, coming to a stop before a massive wall of screens.

‘Ah, Commander, good to see you. I hope there were no problems your end?’

Benton turned to see General McManus striding across the office towards him. ‘Evening, General. What do you mean by problems my end?’

‘It would seem Mr Pearson’s reputation from his regiment days wasn’t exaggerated.’

‘What’s happened?’

‘He killed three of Alpha team and escaped in one of their vehicles,’ said Rufus waving to one of his minions behind a desk.

The geeky-looking man floated his fingers across his keyboard, bringing a screen to life with a recording of Ferney Road from Brunswick Park. Zoomed and digitally enhanced, Benton watched as it showed Danny riding on top of the bonnet, shooting Barnes before the car crashed. His hawk eyes darkened as he watched Danny get in the car while Hamish Campbell appeared out of the shadows to get in the passenger seat.

‘Where are they now?’ he said coldly.

‘We’ve been tracking the car for the last forty minutes. It’s not far from here. The car turned into Old Eye Street five minutes ago and has been stationary ever since. Alpha team are en route, ETA two minutes. I’ve dispatched three other teams to the area. We should have them soon,’ said Rufus with his usual pompous confidence.

‘Mmm, don’t underestimate Pearson, he’s a tough bastard.
